PAVEL BALEFF, GUEST CONDUCTOR
FEI-FEI DONG, PIANO

Pavel Baleff returns as guest conductor conducting a pair of dazzling works from Scandinavian composers. Grieg’s concerto maintains what Tchaikovsky called a "perfect simplicity" while delighting the listener with flashes of brilliant color "like an aurora borealis of sound dancing in the air." Nielsen wrote: "Music is life, and, like life, inextinguishable." His dynamic fourth symphony will leave you dazed but thrilled.

The Music

Niels Wilhelm Gade — Hamlet
Edvard Grieg — Piano Concerto
Carl Nielsen — Symphony No. 4, "The Inextinguishable"  (musician’s choice)

CLASSICS 4 PROGRAM NOTES

Arthur Rubinstein plays the Grieg Piano Concerto
