LEONARD SLATKIN, CONDUCTOR
Internationally acclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin, Music Director Laureate of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, opens the program with Cindy McTee’s Double Play that starts with a tribute to Ives and ends with big band inspired riffs. A wild, impassioned ride, Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini tells a story of doomed love from Dante’s Divine Comedy. From Brahms, we have a symphony that took fourteen years to compose while of battling with the shadow of Beethoven, only to have it called “Beethoven’s Tenth” by the critics. It contains coded messages about his love for Clara Schumann, his troubled friend’s wife, and provides a window into the soul of the young Brahms.
