One of the best pianists of his generation, Rachmaninoff wrote Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini to showcase his own talent. This set of 24 variations on a theme by the 18th century virtuoso violinist includes the breathtaking music heard in the movie, Somewhere in Time. Tchaikovsky described his Sixth Symphony, nicknamed Pathétique — from the Russian word for ‘passionate’ — as “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose.” In it, Tchaikovsky transforms the traditional symphony, ending not with fanfare and joy, but with impassioned agony that fades into a whisper. Stravinsky’s Divertimento from The Fairy’s Kiss is a tribute to Tchaikovsky, his childhood idol.
